How do I merge row or column categories in cross tables?

In some cases you will want to merge categories into larger or more robust categories for your cross tables.

Follow these steps:

  1. Select and right click the table(s) in which you want to merge categories
  2.  The “Options wheel appears”
  3. Select “Edit question”. A “question editor” window will appear.
    1. If you have selected one question, the structure of this will appear.
    2. If you have selected more than one question, there will be a tab for each selected question
  4. For a single or multiple question, the question will appear with the rows only
    1. Select the response-rows you want to merge using the ctrl or shift button togehter with clicking
    2. Right-click, and select merge rows. A new category is created. The categories included in the merged categories are autmatically disabled (un-checked).
    3. Optional: Override the new category text
    4. Optional: The origional categories are automatically unchecked, but you may re-check them if you want to display both the merged and origional categoreies.
  5. For a single or multiple GRID question, all rows and categories are shown. You may merge both:
    1. Select the response-rows you want to merge using the ctrl or shift buttontogehter with clicking
      1. Select merge rows. The original rows are disabled
      2. Optional: Override the new row text
      3. Optional: Enable the original rows
    2. Select the response-columns (not to be mixed with the TABLE-columns)
      1. Right click, and select merge columns. The original columns are disabled
      2. Optional: Override the new category text
      3. Optional: Enable the original columns

Note: The rows in a NUMERIC GRID, i.e. a numeric question with several rows, may NOT be merged in this manner. In that case you should create a “Custom question” using the filter builder.

Note 2: The merge categories is a "logical" OR between all the categories. If you need any other combination, like answerd both categories, you will need to create a “Custom question” using the filter builder.

Select one or mor ecategories using ctrl or shift together with clicking, then right-click and select "Merge rows":
