How do I merge row or column categories in my charts?
In some cases you will want to merge categories into larger or more robust categories for your charts.
Follow these steps:
- Select and right click the chart(s) in which you want to merge categories
- The “Options wheel appears”
- Select “Edit question”. A “question editor” window will appear.
- If you have selected one question, the structure of this will appear.
- If you have selected more than one question, there will be a tab for each selected question
- For a single or multiple question, the question will appear with the rows only
- Select the response-rows you want to merge using the ctrl and shift button
- Select merge rows. A new category is created. The categories included in the merged categories are disabled.
- Optional: Override the new category text
- Optional: You may also enable the automatically original, disabled categories simply by checking them.
- For a single or multiple GRID question, all rows and categories are shown. You may merge both:
- Select the response-rows you want to merge using the ctrl and shift button
- Select merge rows. The original rows are disabled
- Optional: Override the new row text
- Optional: Enable the original rows
- Select the response-columns (not to be mixed with the chart-columns)
- Select merge columns. The original columns are disabled
- Optional: Override the new category text
- Optional: Enable the original columns
- Select the response-rows you want to merge using the ctrl and shift button
Note: The rows in a NUMERIC GRID, i.e. a numeric question with several rows, may NOT be merged in this manner. In that case you should create a “Custom question” using the filter builder.
Note 2: The merge categories will create the logical category “Having answered A OR having answered B OR having answered both A and B” (logically union). If you need any other combination you will need to create a “Custom question” using the filter builder
