How to use answer control to require an answer or to allow "no answer"
Answer required is default EXCEPT for open ended questions. To require an answer to a question (or to allow no answer), you use the answer control interface:
- Select the answer control icon
- In the “Programmed logic” an asterisk is present (answer required).
- Remove the asterisk by selecting “No answer required”. The Programmed logic will be blanked
- Note, if you specify another range of answers, e.g. the answers given in a previous it is NOT necessary to specify “answer required” in addition. Only the allowed range of answers will be allowed.
Allow “No answer” together with a range list
Sometimes you may want to allow only certain categories to be answered (e.g. the answers given in a previous question. However, for some reason you may want to allow the respondent to leave the question unanswered.
- Open the answer control interface by clicking the answer control icon:
- Specify the range control in the “Programmed logic”, e.g. \Q1 (only the answers given in Question number 1)
- Add “no answer allowed” in addition (-). Use paranthesis and the pipe symbol (OR)
- The expression should then be as shown below:
- “No answer” OR “The answers given in question Q1” are allowed
